The city is more than its monuments – an independent editorial guide to Luxor, Egypt

The city is more than its monuments

Explore Luxor is an independent editorial guide to Luxor, Egypt. We cover its ancient monuments, archaeological discoveries, living culture, food, landscapes and everyday life, while helping visitors plan their time in Luxor with confidence.

From the temples of Karnak and Luxor to the tombs of the Theban mountains, and from the Nile and village roads to the markets and kitchens of the modern city, our goal is to show Luxor as a living place, not simply a collection of archaeological sites.

Why Explore Luxor exists

Luxor is often presented in one of two ways: as an archaeological destination or as a stop on an Egypt itinerary.

It is both, and much more. We created Explore Luxor to bring those sides together, so that:
Visitors
A visitor searching for Karnak can understand its history and significance.
First-timers
A first-time traveller planning three days in Luxor can understand how to get around, what to see and what it costs.
Enthusiasts
Someone fascinated by ancient Egypt can follow the discoveries, people and traditions that continue beyond the monuments.

How we research and correct

Luxor’s history is full of simplified stories, repeated claims, uncertain dates and information copied from one website to another. We try not to add to that problem.

Sources
For historical and archaeological subjects, we work from academic publications, archaeological documentation, institutional resources and specialist research. Factual claims with meaningful historical or archaeological significance are checked against credible primary or peer-reviewed sources before publication.
Uncertainty
Where evidence is uncertain or interpretations differ, we aim to distinguish established evidence from scholarly interpretation and open questions.
Practical info
Opening times, prices, transport arrangements and other visitor information can become outdated.
Spotted an error? If you spot an error or know something we missed, please tell us. Corrections are handled under our Corrections Policy.

Independence and funding

Independent
We are not a government tourism authority, an archaeological institution or a tour operator.
References
We may refer to museums, universities, archaeological missions, UNESCO and other organisations as sources. Those references do not imply affiliation or endorsement unless we explicitly say so.
Funding
Running an independent editorial resource requires writing, research, photography, technology, hosting and ongoing maintenance. We currently support Explore Luxor through advertising, affiliate relationships and occasional disclosed partnerships.
Editorial decisions stay separate. These commercial relationships are kept separate from editorial decisions. We do not accept payment for editorial coverage, and our recommendations are based on editorial judgement. Full details are available in our Affiliate Disclosure.
