Goorneh - The portico, reverse view

Portico of the memorial (or mortuary) temple of Sety I (1294-1279 BC) at Thebes, near the modern town of el-Qurn (or Qurna). Eight papyrus-bundle columns are shown in situ still supporting the architraves and roofing slabs on top. A collapsed ninth column is in the foreground, to the left. Two pairs of local men, one accompanied by a donkey, are included in the image. The temple was built by Seti I, son of Rameses I and father of Rameses II, towards the end of his reign and completed under the reign of his son. It contained a chamber dedicated to the memory of Rameses I, who ruled for a very short period and did not have time to build a mortuary temple for himself in Thebes.
